Print awareness is incredibly important for a toddler's journey to reading because it is the fundamental understanding that print carries meaning. It's the very first step in connecting the squiggles on a page to the words we speak.  Here’s a breakdown of why it's so vital:  • Understanding how books work: Print awareness teaches a child that books have a front and a back, that pages are turned one at a time, and that we read from left to right and top to bottom.  • Recognizing the purpose of print: A toddler with good print awareness understands that the words on a sign, a cereal box, or a book cover are there to communicate something. They know that the pictures tell a story, but the words are the specific message.  • Connecting spoken words to written words: As a parent points to a word while reading it aloud, the child begins to make the connection between the spoken word and the printed word. This is called "word-to-word matching," and it's a huge step toward independent reading.  • Building a foundation for phonics: Once a child understands that individual letters and words have meaning, they are ready to learn that each letter has a specific sound. Without print awareness, the concept of phonics would be much more difficult to grasp. In short, print awareness is the roadmap to reading.
